Entitled Freshwater
Biodiversity: a preliminary global assessment, this book is No. 8 in the WCMC
Biodiversity Series. The book provides information on inland waters and their
biodiversity and includes the first global assessment of areas of special importance
for freshwater bioidversity.

An Information Note from UNEP on the future
of WCMC - the need for an integrated Centre which can bring together and evaluate
information on biodiversity and biological resources worldwide, and enhance capacities
to handle such information at global, regional and national levels, with particular
reference to the needs of developing countries and international conventions.

1998 is proving to be the worst on record for the phenomenon of coral
bleaching, with shocking reports arising from countries across all of the world's
seas and oceans. Vast areas of coral reefs have been devastated, with up to 90% of
