Founded by IUCN - The World Conservation Union,
the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), over 20 years ago, the World Conservation Monitoring
Centre is now an independent organisation which has become the world's
principle source of information on the living planet.
WCMC's philosophy is simple. Our world renowned, dedicated teams of experts are totally
committed to providing unique, unbiased and factual information which is freely available
to everyone, educating the uninformed and allowing other conservation groups, governments,
industry and commerce around the globe to make fundamental decisions on issues which
affect us all.
Why we need your help
Since 1970 a third of the natural world has been destroyed
by human activity.
- The health of freshwater ecosystems almost everywhere is in decline.
- The annual loss of the world's forest cover is equivalent to an
area the size of Norway.
- Coral
reefs are home to more than a
quarter of marine fish species, yet nearly 60% are threatened.
- 90% of mountain forests have been lost from the Andes.
- Global carbon dioxide emissions have doubled in twenty years.
This period of history has become the most destructive
for the natural world since the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Your support will help us in our continuous efforts to improve the
delivery of critical information as well as develop and implement essential
leading-edge technology systems worldwide - which will help to shape
and improve our living planet for decades to come.
Together, we really can make a difference.
