ABSTRACT
This workshop will focus on five themes involved in the creation and maintenance of a top quality Biochemistry/Molecular Biology program at the Undergraduate level. The first of these themes, "Biochemistry: Chemistry or Biology" will discuss three topics:
- How to start and maintain a strong Biochemistry program,
- How to fulfil the ACS Biochemistry requirements in a program, and
- What are the core aims of an undergraduate Biochemistry/Molecular Biology program.
The second theme, "Research in the Undergraduate Context" will feature discussions on "How to involve undergraduates in research", How to fund research in an undergraduate environment" and "Research Supervising and Teaching Loads: a plea to Administrators". The theme "Institutional Resources for Strong Programs" will discuss the costs, in terms of
- dollars,
- buildings and space, and
- faculty and support staff necessary for a strong program in an undergraduate institution.
The fourth theme, focusing on "Service Learning and Outreach" will discuss ideas for undergraduate involvement in outreach to the k12 system, the ways that WWW resources can be used in outreach and the impact that undergraduate biochemistry/molecular biology clubs can have on both education and outreach.
The final theme that will be addressed involves "Assessment of Biochemistry Programs" and will feature discussions related to "What Should be Assessed?", "Innovative Tools for Assessment" and "How to Use the Results of Assessment".
Issues to be Addressed
- How to fulfil the ACS Biochemistry requirements
- Research in the undergraduate context
- How to start and maintain a strong Biochemistry program
- Service learning and outreach
- What should be assessed
