Search Capabilities/Tips

Firstly, choose the required database under the 'Search' drop-down menu. Either: 'Forests in Flux: Reviewed database' or 'Forests in Flux: Citation database'. Alternatively both databases can be searched at once by selecting 'All databases'.

There are two ways of searching, either via a Quick Search or an Advanced Search. A brief list of Important Buttons is also described here. Full details of search techniques can be found within the 'Help' menu on the Reference Web Poster interface, which hosts the Forests in Flux databases. Here is a brief summary of how to search, and also some possible search suggestions.

Essential: Searching in the 'Forests in Flux: Reviewed database' must be carried out using an 'Advanced Search', and should include 'All indexed fields' and 'All non-indexed fields' to maximise the retrieval of appropriate references using the search terms.

This method only allows searching in indexed fields. These are:

  • Author
  • Keywords (Forests in Flux: Reviewed database ONLY)
  • Periodical (refers to Journal name only)
  • Publication Date

A Quick Search does not allow you to specify any of the above fields individually; rather, it searches these fields collectively. But, more than one search term can be used. For example, a simple search may be:

  • term1 term2 (assumes AND as the connector)
  • term1 OR term2
  • term1 NOT term2

A more complicated search may string more search terms together e.g.

  • forest AND temperate NOT Smith OR 1998

Further tips:

  • Multi word phrases must be surrounded by quotation marks e.g. "climate change" so that the constituent words are not searched for individually.
  • A wild card search is assumed at the end of two or more characters.
  • Searching for an asterisk (*) is not a wild card search, but is literal.
  • Up to 9 search terms can be entered into the 'Text to Search for' box.
  • Searches are not case sensitive, but sensitive to spelling and spacing.

This search method differs from Quick Search in a number of ways. Firstly, it allows searching in non-indexed fields, as well as the indexed fields (as defined in the Quick Search). But, unlike in Quick Search, it is possible to specify the search to any one of the individual indexed fields and the Titles field, as well as searching the indexed fields collectively. The non-indexed fields are:

  • Title (book title, article title etc.)

Non-indexed fields in the Forests in Flux: Reviewed database ONLY:

  • Notes (This is a VITAL field, containing all of the reviewed information).
  • WCMC Forest Category.
  • Forest Type (generic forest/ecosystem type as given by the reference).
  • Region (study area, country, region).
  • Type of study (e.g. model, field, review, report, searchable bibliography, database, model metadata).

Note: Non-indexed fields can only be searched in collectively.

ESSENTIAL: Searching in the 'Forests in Flux: Reviewed database' must be carried out using an 'Advanced Search', and should include 'All indexed fields' and 'All non-indexed fields' to maximise the retrieval of appropriate references using the search terms.

For an advanced search there are two options:

Option 1: Same line search: The AND, OR and NOT connectors can be used, but the search terms must be surrounded by curly brackets:

e.g. {forest} AND {temperate} NOT {Smith} OR {1998}

Note: This is ONLY appropriate when the multiple search is specific to either: 'all indexed fields' or 'all non-indexed fields'. For a search combining 'all indexed fields' and 'all non-indexed fields', Option 2 must be used.

Option 2: Multiple line search: Allows the selection of the AND, OR and NOT connectors under the 'Boolean' heading on the Reference Web Poster interface, and importantly allows the choice of fields or collective fields to search in under the 'Field to Search' heading.

Further tips:

  • In Advanced Search, double quotation marks are not used for multi word phrases such as climate change (unlike in Quick Search), because it literally searches for quotation marks.
  • A wild card search is assumed at the end of two or more characters.
  • Searching for an asterisk (*) is not a wild card search, but is literal.
  • Searches are not case sensitive, but sensitive to spelling and spacing.
  • Punctuation is recognised literally.

Possible 'general searches' in the Forests in Flux: Reviewed database

Search for:

  • Temperate and boreal: (in the indexed and non-indexed fields)
  • Tropical: (in the indexed and non-indexed fields)
  • Type of study: (in the non-indexed fields)

These searches will retrieve all papers which refer to such topics.

Further tip:

  • If in any of the references there is an unfamiliar abbreviation, acronym or unit, search for: "Abbreviations, acronyms and units" using an Advanced Search in the 'all non-indexed fields'. This will bring up a reference with a list of abbreviations, acronyms and units that have been described.

Mark Page: Inserts check marks in the box next to every reference on the current page.

Mark All: Marks all the references you found in a particular search. Clear Marked List: Clears the check mark from all Marked References.

Save Mark: Marks are automatically saved. This button is only necessary if some other web page is visited that is not associated with Reference Web Poster during its use, to ensure that marks are retained.

Full Record Viewing: To view a complete reference from either an Advanced Search or Quick Search, click on the full record icon to the left of the listed reference.

Export: Provides the option to export your marked references directly to a Reference Manager, ProCite or EndNote database.
