Information Collection Methodology

A systematic review of relevant articles relating to the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems was undertaken from appropriate scientific literature and the World Wide Web. Relevant scientific reports (e.g. IPCC) were also consulted. Details of models, projects, initiatives, organisations and people involved in the subject were predominantly obtained through contacts made by attending the ECLAT-2 Workshop EW-2 "Climate scenarios for agricultural, ecosystem and biological impacts", Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany, 13-15 October, 1999. The literature contained within the database contains information from these various sources, predominantly from the 1990's.

Priority was given to recent data, which gave information about forest types in preference to species-specific research. A system was devised to enable prioritisation of articles according to relevance of content. Higher priority was given to less well studied areas (e.g. many boreal forest studies were found, therefore, once several had been selected for inclusion, others were given lower scores and since relatively few studies e.g. on mangroves were found, this ecosystem type was given a higher priority score). This provided a broader overview of different ecosystem types.
