Simplified Vascular Plant
A
Quiescent Center
occurs
at the
Apex
of the
Root
&
Shoot
These
contain
the
"Initials"
Mitosis is rare
Both are capable of regenerating complete organs.
The Quiescent Centers
are
surrounded
by a
Peripheral Zone
(PZ) of
highly mitotic cells.
Various terms are applied to areas of the PZ that have distinctive division patterns (i.e. Rib Meristem).
A zone of Cell Elongation and a zone of Cell Differentiation occur basipetally (from the apex towards the base).
This produces the three Primary Tissues(Epidermis, Ground & Vascular).
Secondary Roots have an internal origin and appear in a sequential pattern.
The Shoot Apical Meristem produces Leaves and Secondary Shoots (Branches) superficially.
Leaves
are formed near the
Meristem Proper
in a highly ordered manner.
Secondary Branches have a Superficial Origin where Leaves join the Stem
The specific location is called the
Leaf Axil.
Consequently, these shoots are often called
Axillary.

Coleus

Shoot Apex of
Lonicera
showing well-developed Axillary Buds.
