Diagram of the tissues present
after a limited amount of secondary growth in a stem like Coleus. The xylem and
Phloem have been combined for the sake of simplicity.
The
accumulation of Secondary Xylem creates a pressure within the stem. Consequently, part of
the Pith is crushed.
A
Phellogen
(Cork Cambium) may arise in the Cortex.
As Cork (Phellem) accumulates,
the Epidermis dies, cracks and eventually falls away.
Isolated
regions of the Cork Cambium can become hyperactive and produce Lenticils.
