Cross-sections of the Internodes show that there are a series of hollow canals. The cells were destroyed by rapid stem elongation.

A solid septum is found at the Nodes.

Epidermal cells have thick Cutenized walls.

The surface is rough due to the presence of Silicon. Equisetum is the only genus of plants which preferentially use Silicon for cell wall strengthening. It would be interesting to compare the enzymes involved in Silicone synthesis for Equisetum and Diatoms!

Stomata are found in grooves. This seems to be a constant theme in the plants we have studied so far!

The stomata are also Sunken below the surface of the stem.
