UNEP-WCMC's Forest Programme produces integrated and accessible information on the conservation of the world's forests and their biodiversity, as well as providing support in managing this information.

Our information resources and services are available through the following sections:

  • Data Sets and Maps - on forest types, extent and distribution and background information on the Forest Programme's forest mapping history, classification system and data harmonisation process. Also, information on potential original forest cover, current forest cover and protection (including a new global, regional and country-level statistical analysis), forest management and forest biodiversity.
  • Analysis for Decision-making: Trends and Indicators - analyses and syntheses of forest data to facilitate policy and decision-making, including: priority areas for forest conservation in relation to climate change (Forests in Flux); putting development and forest conservation in context using poverty indicators (Poverty Mapping - internet map server - coming soon); trends in forest area and forest ecosystem status in the last 30 years (Living Planet Index); conservation status of European forests (European Forest Gap Analysis 2000); and defining priority areas for forest restoration.
  • Regions - access to information provided on a regional basis.
  • Information Management Support - the Forest Programme's activities to strengthen national agencies capacities to manage forest information, including developing a methodology for designing and building forest information systems, through the Forest Information Strategy (ForIS).
  • Collaboration and Networking - involvement in forest-related projects such as the Tropical Montane Cloud Forest Initiative, the Global Trees Campaign and the Global Forest Information Service (GFIS).
  • Forest Web Links - links to other forest-related organisations and agencies, many of whom are close collaborators of UNEP-WCMC, as well as links to other useful websites.
