Jan Alber has recently completed his Habilitation at the University of Freiburg. He is the author of Narrating the Prison: Representation and Role in Charles Dickens’ Novels, Twentieth-Century Fiction, and Film (Cambria Press, 2007) and the editor/co-editor of collections such as Stones of Law, Bricks of Shame: Narrating Imprisonment in the Victorian Age (with Frank Lauterbach, University of Toronto Press, 2009), Postclassical Narratology: Approaches and Analyses (with Monika Fludernik, Ohio State University Press, 2010), and A Poetics of Unnatural Narrative (with Henrik Skov Nielsen and Brian Richardson, Ohio State University Press, 2013). Alber has authored and co-authored articles that were published in such journals as Anglistik, Arbeiten aus Anglistik und Amerikanistik, Dickens Studies Annual, Germanisch-Romanische Monatsschrift, Journal of Narrative Theory, The Journal of Popular Culture, Literature Compass, Narrative, Storyworlds, Style, and Zeitschrift für Anglistik und Amerikanistik. In 2007, Alber received a fellowship from the German Research Foundation (DFG) to spend a year at Ohio State University under the auspices of Project Narrative. In 2010, the Humboldt Foundation awarded him a Feodor Lynen Fellowship for Experienced Researchers to continue his research at the University of North Carolina (Greensboro) and the University of Maryland (College Park). The “Deutscher Anglistenverband,” the Association of German Professors of English, has recently awarded him a prize for the best Habilitation in English Studies between March 2011 and March 2013.
