We have already seen what the Vascular Cambium looks like in Cross-sections. It is a region composed of small rectangular cells.
The Cambial Initials have two shapes. Some have a fusiform shape when seen in Tangential Section. They resemble Elongated Rectangular Cells with Pointed end walls. They are called "Fusiform Initials" and they produce the Axial System. When they are organized into distinct horizontal tiers they are called "Storied".
Others are more or less square and are clustered. These are the Ray Initials and they produce the Rays.
Cambial Initials are densely cytoplasmic compared to adjacent cells and they have relatively thin walls.
