Podocarpus Stem Cross-Section Stained with Phloroglucinol - Note the
lignified cells in the Xylem & Phloem.
Gymnosperm wood contains only Tracheids. The absence of Vessel Members lends an homogenous
appearance to these woods. However, tracheids produced under good growing conditions (Early Wood) have wider diameters and thinner walls than those
produced at the end of the growing season (Late Wood). This
results in structural and functional specialization. The "early wood" is
designed for the best conduction while the "late wood" is better for support.
