Microscopic Images of Embryo Development in Capsella


Capsella is in the same family as Arabidopsis.

It is typically used to teach embryo development for Dicots.

You will see many similarities with Embryogenesis in Arabidopsis.

The Protoderm is defined at the late Globular Stage. The Hypophysis is also apparent. It is the only part of the Suspensor that contributes to the Mature Embryo

The Cotyledons Appear as lateral outgrowths from the apex of the Globular Embryo.
This is called the Heart Stage. The Image on the left is "Early Heart Stage" while "Late Heart / Torpedo Stage" can be seen on the right above. The axis also elongates during this stage.

The Three Primary Meristems and the two Apical Meristems are defined around "Late Heart Stage/Torpedo Stage".
