Branched trichomes from Hibiscus.   These may deter herbivory. The Red cells contain Anthocyanins.

OhiaXSemTrich.jpg (28392 bytes) These are trichomes on an Ohi'a Lehua leave seen with SEM. They can occur on both the upper (Adaxial) or lower (Abaxial) surfaces. They may constitute 40% of the leaf biomass!

The trichomes are birefringent in polarized light. This indicates that they have thick cell Walls.
