Part of this lecture is based on Chapter 4 (Niklas 1997)
The Evolutionary Biology of Plants

The First Land Plants Provided the Substrate for All of those to follow (Animals & Plants)

Land Plants = "Photosynthetic eukaryotes capable of successful sexual reproduction on land."

Because Algae and Plants are primary producers they provided the food and habitat for other terrestrial organisms.

Algae and Plants led the invasion of the terasphere while animals were merely camp-followers.

As plants became more complex, more habitats became available for animals & other plants.

Why bother Conquering the Land/Air

Direct Access to Sunlight without the effects of Water which absorbs light, especially the wavelengths most useful for photosynthesis.

Carbon dioxide, the substrate for Photosynthesis is not very soluble in water but is readily absorbed from the atmosphere.

Oxygen is also relatively insoluble in water but is present in abundance in the atmosphere.
