The World Conservation Monitoring Centre provides information services on conservation and sustainable use of the world's living resources, and helps others to develop information systems of their own.

        Species Information

The Threatened Plant Database and Tree Conservation Database
The Plants Programme at WCMC maintains two databases on threatened plants. The Threatened Plants Database has been developed over a period of many years and currently contains data on more than 140,000 plant names. Part of the dataset was published in the 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants. The Tree Conservation Database was developed from the Threatened Plants Database between 1995 and 1998 and contains updated information on over 8000 tree species and 1994 IUCN Red List Categories. The World List of Threatened Trees was published as a result in 1998.

The 1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals
The second electronic version of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals represents a comprehensive inventory of threatened species and subspecies on a global scale. This information resource is a result of long-term collaboration between countless individuals worldwide and many organisations, notably WCMC, IUCN Species Survival Commission and BirdLife International.

        Threatened Plants of the World
The Threatened Plants Database contains conservation data on over 140,000 plant names, providing a unique overview of plants threatened at the global level. The 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants was printed directly from this database.

        Integrated Species Information (draft)
In collaboration with a wide number of organisations, WCMC compiles and manages a wealth of information on threatened and protected species. A new integrated information service, currently in a draft form, is presented here.

        Species Under Threat
WCMC have compiled descriptions of some 140 species listed in the IUCN Red Lists. This work was done in collaboration with WWF, with support from Chevron.

        Arctic Bird Library
A regional focus, providing details on the status and distribution, together with photos, sound and range maps, of waterbirds and waders which breed in the Arctic, as defined by CAFF (Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna).

These data are compiled and managed by the WCMC Biodiversity Assessment Programme. Click here for more conservation databases.
