Temperate and Boreal Forests and Protected Areas |
||||
|
Background Temperate and Boreal forest constitute 40% of the world's forest cover, yet they have received far less international conservation attention than tropical forests. To support efforts to raise the profile of Temperate and Boreal forest, WCMC has produced a set of maps for eleven different regions that show forests and protected areas (IUCN categories I-IV). Data from remote sensing programmes and national sources were used to create a set of maps with a common forest classification system. These 'harmonised' maps eliminate the problem of making direct comparisons between national maps which have been produced using different classifications. WCMC aims to provide enivironmental decision-makers with more accessible information on the status of Temperate and Boreal forest in order to improve forest management and conservation. The Forest Programme is currently working with IUCN to produce an internet-based Conservation Atlas of Temperate and Boreal forest, which will contain comprehensive map information on forests and their biodiversity for each region. |
