The fruits of Apples and Pears (Pyrus) are similar to those of the Cucurbitaceae because they
develop from Epigynous Flowers with an Inferior Ovary. They are classified as Berries but are also Accessory Fruits. These fruits are called Pomes.
Apples may be called FALSE Berries because the Hypanthium is adnate to the
Pericarp & both contribute to the fleshy fruit.

The outer fleshy
part of the fruit develops from the Hypanthium. This is Accessory Tissue!!!
The three internal layers are produced by the Pericarp.
The final papery layer is the Endocarp.
Pears are identical to apple except
for their flask-like shape.
