The first step is a Periclinal division in the Epidermis which produces and Inner and Outer Cell.

The Inner Cell undergoes a series of Periclinal Divisions to produce a vertical cell file called the Axial Row.

Most of the cells become the Neck Canal. The lowest cell becomes the Egg.

The Outer Cell undergoes two Anticlinal Divisions to produce four surface cells. They continue to divide Periclinally and produce the four columns of the Neck.

Note that the Egg is usually buried inside the Gametophyte. I made it visible so that you could see the relationship between the cells.
