Stem Anatomy
is complex compared to the previous taxa we have examined. The Epidermis forms multicellular Rhizoids which provide Anchorage
& AbsorptionThere is a Cortex
just inside the Epidermis of Stems & "Rhizomes". It contains Thick-Walled cells which provide Storage & Support.
There is a Central Strand which contains Vascular Tissues. These are called Leptoids
(Phloem) & Hydroids
("Xylem").
Support Cells called Sterids are
also present. These are like Sclerenchyma Fibers found in seed plants. |

Polytrichum Stem X-S

Central Strand from Polytrichum
Note the Vascular Tissues & the Leaf Traces in the Cortex.

Stereids & Hydroids in the
Central Strand
Note the small diameter of the Sterids & their relatively
thick walls.
