The Root Apical Meristem is an Apical Cell.

Roots originate at the Nodes of Rhizomes, Stolons and Aerial Stems.

They are Adventitious in Origin, and do not arise from pre-existing Roots. They have an Endogenous Origin from the Endodermis or Pericycle. However, further branching of the roots originates from within the roots themselves. Roots can cover the outside of Stems (Especially Tree Ferns).

Remember that Dichotomous Branches originate from the Tip or apex, not from internal tissues. We can call this Exogenous Origin.

Why might an Endogenous Origin of Roots be superior to an Exogenous?

A Root is present in the Embryo and functions briefly during the early growth of the Sporophyte.

Fern Root Anatomy is very much like the other roots we have studied.

The Epidermis produces Root Hairs.

The Cortex has Sclerenchyma & Parenchyma.

Cells frequently contain brown pigments which are probably tannins.

The Endodermis is Prominent.

The Stele is an Actinostele.
