Equisetum Leaves are papery-thin. They are not
substantial and are not well developed for photosynthesis.Careful studies have shown that the individual Microphylls are united into a sheath-like structure. The number of pointed tips indicates
the number of Microphylls present.
They are present on Aerial Stems &
Rhizomes
Branching occurs at the Nodes. Some species do not routinely form branches,
unless the stem is injured.
Shoot and Root Meristems are both present and alternate with one
another.
This allows one
stem segment to produce a new plant.
Since the
stems float, it is easy to imagine how Equisetum
plants could colonize sites which are "down-stream" or on distant shores.
