Diversity is very low. There is only one Genus (Equisetum) and 15 species!

Based on the focssil record we know that Equisetum was  present in the Carboniferous & has changed little over time.

Related plants once formed the dominant vegetation over a vast area of the planet. There are many Extinct Species including Trees.

Occurrence & Distribution is World-wide
(Except Australia & N. Zealand).

They have a broad range and can be found from the Tropics to the Arctic.
