How to make a
Simplified Archegonium |

|

|
The first step is a Periclinal division in the Epidermis which
produces and Inner and Outer Cell. |
The Inner Cell undergoes a series of Periclinal Divisions to
produce a vertical cell file called the Axial Row. |

|

|
| Most
of the cells become the Neck Canal. The lowest cell becomes the Egg. |
The Outer Cell undergoes two Anticlinal
Divisions to produce four surface cells. They continue to divide Periclinally
and produce the four columns of the Neck. |
Note that the Egg is usually buried inside the Gametophyte. I
made it visible so that you could see the relationship between the cells. |
