        Biodiversity Map Library

        Introduction

The WCMC Biodiversity Map Library is a unique tool for accessing spatial information on the world's biodiversity. This demonstration has been compiled to introduce you to WCMC Biodiversity Map Library functions and applications. We hope you will find it informative and interesting.

The WCMC Biodiversity Map Library (or BML) is a library of mapped information related to the conservation of the world's biological diversity.

        • Biodiversity - Biological diversity is under threat from a number of sources. Information is needed to document its occurrence and identify the major threats to its conservation.

        • Map - Such information is best presented as maps. By using computer mapping techniques, many different themes - vegetation cover, species ranges and protected area boundaries - can be presented in a common format related to their geographical distribution.

        • Library - In order to locate the right information rapidly out of such a huge global database, it must be stored in a known location and referenced in a robust catalogue that anyone can use. These are the elements of a library - in this case, an electronic one.
