Vascular Plant Family Nomenclature:
Fate of Suprageneric Proposals at the St. Louis Nomenclature Session for the XVI International Botanical Congress

James L. Reveal

Norton-Brown Herbarium, University of Maryland.

Several important items relating to suprageneric names were approved at the Nomenclature Session held 26-30 Jul 1999 in conjuntion with the XVI International Botanical Congress in St. Louis, Missouri (see the proposals and the comments by the Rapporteurs). All final wording and disposition of proposed changes must be evaluated and edited into the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature by the Editorial Committee. The following proposals made by me were approved (19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 30 as amended from the floor), rejected (101) or referred to a newly established Special Committee on Suprageneric Names (24, 25, 26, 27 28 and 29):

The present Art. 16.1 shall be replaced with the following:

"16.1. The names of taxa above the rank of family are treated as nouns in the plural and are written with an initial capital letter. They may be either (a) automatically typified names formed by adding a termination denoting their rank to the genitive singular stem of a generic name, or (b) descriptive names that are formed differently, apply to taxa with a recognized circumscription, and may be used unchanged at different ranks."

"Ex. 1. Automatically typified names above the rank of family: Magnoliophyta, Gnetophytina, Pinopsida, Marattiidae, Piperanae, Fucales, Bromeliineae."

"Ex. 2. Descriptive names above the rank of family: Angiospermae, Anthophyta, Centrospermae, Chlorophyta, Coniferae, Enantioblastae, Gymnospermae, Parietales."

In considering Proposal 23, the Rapporteurs suggest some additional, modified wording that was approved and will be likely included in Art. 16.1. This will require some re-editing of the above wording so as to indicate that suprafamilial names are formed by "replacing the termination -aceae in a legitimate name of an included family by the termination denoting their rank." This will certain work for automatically typified names but will be difficult for some traditional descriptive names that lack distinctive terminations (e.g., Coniferae, Enantioblastae, Gymnospermae, etc.).

A new paragraph will be added to Art. 16, probably following the revised Art. 16.1:

"16.?. For automatically typified names, the name of a subdivision or subphylum which includes the type of the adopted name of a division or phylum, the name of a subclass which includes the type of the adopted name of a class, or the name of a suborder which includes the type of the adopted name of an to be order, are to be based on the same type."

"Ex. 3. Pteridophyta Bergen & B. M. Davis (1906) and Pteridophytina B. Boivin (1956); Gnetopsida Engl. (1898) and Gnetidae Cronquist & al. (1966); Liliales Perleb (1826) and Liliineae Rchb. (1841)."

Rec. 16A.4 shall be converted into a rule and will be added to Art. 16:

"16.?. When an automatically typified name above the rank of family has been published with a Latin termination not agreeing with the provisions of this Article, the termination must be changed to conform with the rule, without change of the author's name or date of publication (see Art. 32.6)."

"Ex. 4. "Cactarieae" (Dumortier, 1829, from Cactus) and "Coriales" (Lindley, 1833, from Coriaria) are to be corrected to Cactales Dumort. (1829) and Coriariales Lindl. (1833) respectively."

The concept expressed in an example in Art. 18 will be rendered into a rule in Art. 16. While the following examples were adopted, the Editorial Committee will consider all examples anew and one or more of the following may be revised or dropped entirely:

"16.?. Names of taxa above the rank of genus proposed with a non-Latin termination are not validly published."

"Ex. 5. "Acoroidées" (Kirschl., Fl. Alsace 2: 103. 1853-Jul 1857) is not to be accepted as "Acorales Kirschl.", because it has a French rather than a Latin termination. The name Acorales was later validated by Reveal (in Phytologia 79: 72. 1996)."

"Ex. 6. "Melantheen" (Kitt. in A. Richard, Nouv. Elém. Bot., ed. 3, Germ. transl.: 727. 1840) is not to be accepted as "Melanthieae Kitt.", because it has a German rather than a Latin termination. The name Melanthieae was validated later by Grisebach (Spic. Fl. Rumel. 2: 377. 1846)."

"Ex. 7. "Ginkgoales" (Tieghem in Bull. Soc. Bot. France 43: 209-210. 1897) is not to be accepted as "Ginkgoales Tiegh.", because as used by Tieghem the name has a French rather than a Latin termination. The name Ginkgoales was validated later by Bessey (in Trans. Amer. Microscop. Soc. 20: 95. 1910)."

The last example clearly is of concern as may be seen by the Rapporteurs' comments, but the point of adding the example is to make clear that even if the termination seemingly is given correctly, it may not be intended to be a latinized word. Tieghem used the termination "-ales" in this instance, like all of his other suprageneric names, with the French termination for the rank of order. The Rapporteurs' suggest that adoption of this principle would "lead to devalidation of many names of families and orders published in English texts." This would be true if the name is given as "ginkgoales" rather than "Ginkgoales" and there is evidence from the context that the author is using such words as common names. Like the Tieghem example, the intent of the nature of the word is clear from the context. When the Code alludes to suprageneric names and employees proper termination, surely no one suggests names such as Ginkgoaceae or Ginkgoales in the Code are in English rather than Latin. The example makes clear that one must be careful when considering the validity of certain names.

A proposed clarification of the Code regarding the use of illegitimate generic names as a type for a suprageneric name was adopted. The proposed rewording of the Rapporteurs was accepted although final wording is yet to be established by the Editorial Committee. Nonetheless, the following example will likely be added to the Code.

"Ex. 8. The names Caryophyllidae Takht. (Sist. Filog. Cvetk. Rast.: 144. 1967), Caryophyllanae Takht. (Sist. Filog. Cvetk. Rast.: 144. 1967) and Caryophyllales Perleb (Naturgesch. Pflanzenr.: 312. 1826) are legitimate because the family Caryophyllaceae Juss. (Gen. Pl.: 299. 1789) is conserved, even though its type, CaryophyllusMill. (1754) non L. (1753), is illegitimate."

The proposal to follow tradition and correct suprageneric names formed by adding the suffix Eu- failed seemingly meaning that numerous names now in current usage must be changed. Nonetheless, the question was referred to a newly established Special Committee on Suprageneric Names thereby leaving the matter unresolved. I urge members of the systematic community to follow tradition and continue to treat these names as orthographic errors rather than invalidly published names as now mandated by the Code. See my note entitled Impact of the Failure to Introduce Art. 16, Prop. F to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature for more details.

Without clear direction I am uncertain whether to recommend following tradition and continue deleting the suffix or find the first use of the name without the suffix.

Several other items were referred to an approved Special Committee on Suprageneric Names. These include Proposal 25 that converts Rec. 16A.1-3 to a rule:

"16.1septies. An automatically typified name of a taxon above the rank of family is formed by replacing the termination -aceae of an effectively published family name with a termination appropriate to the rank. The termination for each rank is as follows:

    1. Division or phylum: -phyta, unless it is a division or phylum of fungi (-mycota).
    2. Subdivision or subphylum: -phytina, unless it is a subdivision or subphylum of fungi (-mycotina).
    3. Class: -opsida, unless it is a class of algae (-phyceae) or fungi (-mycetes).
    4. Subclass: -idae, unless it is a subclass of algae (-phycidae) or fungi (-mycetidae).
    5. Superorder: -anae.
    6. Order: -ales.
    7. Suborder: -ineae."

There was strong support to remove the proposed termination for superorders. It is my hope the Special Committee will recommend the above proposal to the Vienna Congress in 2005 with the termination -anae recommended for use for names proposed at the rank of superorder.

Two other matters relating to Art. 16 were referred to the Special Committee, namely proposals 26 and 27:

"In choosing among typified names for a taxon above the rank of family, authors should generally follow the principle of priority. In choosing among competing names, authors should adopt those typified by an accepted family name."

"However, names of automatically typified taxa above the rank of family should be selected regardless of priority so as to retain a consistency among all of the appropriate ranks (e.g., Pinophyta, Pinophytina, Pinopsida, Pinidae, Pinales, Pininae, and Pinaceae; or Magnoliophyta, Liliopsida, Commelinidae, Commelinales, and Commelinaceae)."

A proposal to establish "-ita" as a termination for purposefully proposed unranked names after 1 Jan 2000 was defeated.

The proposal to establish ranks for the works of Engler and Prantl (Proposal 28) was referred to the Special Committee with the understanding that workers will continue the traditional practice of considering names that end with the terminations -oideae, -eae and -inae are to be regarded as proposed at the ranks of subfamily, tribe and subtribe respectively. Likewise, Proposal 29 that would allow certain unranked Endlicher names to be treated as if validly published at the rank of family was referred to the Committee with the same understanding that the traditional use of these names at the rank of family shall continue.

Proposal 30, revising Art. 35.2, as originally proposed was withdrawn and the following submitted from the floor:

35.2bquater. For suprageneric names published on or after 1 January 1908, the use of one of the terminations specified by Art. 17-19 and Rec. 16A is accepted as an indication of the corresponding rank, unless this (a) would conflict with the explicitly designated rank of the taxon (which takes precedence) or (b) would result in a rank sequence contrary to Art. 5(in which case Art. 33.5 applies).

Ex. 2bis. Jussieu (in Mém. Mus. Hist. Nat. 12: 497. 1827) proposed Zanthoxyleae without specifying the rank. Although he employed the termination for tribe (-eae), the name is still unranked and the correct citation is Zanthoxyleae (A. Juss.) Dumort. (Anal. Fam. Pl.: 45. 1829) when the rank of tribe was ascribed by Dumortier to the Jussieu name.

Ex. 2quater. Lindley (Veg. Kingd.: 1846) assigned "subordo" (i.e., subfam.: Art. 19.2), "section" and "tribe" to some of his infrafamilial names; as a result, those names not assigned any rank are unranked regardless of the typography or arrangement of the names in the work, or the termination employed for each name.

Ex. 2quinquies. The names Parnassiales (p. 243), Lophiolaceae (p. 225), Ranzanioideae (p. 239) and Urospatheae (p. 217) are validly published by Nakai (Chosakuronbun Mokuroku [Ord. Fam. Trib. Nov.], 1943) and are to be accepted at the ranks of order, family, subfamily and tribe respectively by virtue of their terminations even though no rank was stated specifically.

The examples cited here and one in the original proposal, will be considered, namely: "Bartling (Ord. Nat. Pl.: 36. 1830), in his discussion of infrafamily groups in Restionaceae, termed them "tribe"; as this is the only rank used for his otherwise rankless infrafamilial names, all infrafamilial names are assigned the rank of tribe."

The means by which suprageneric names are currently validated were outlined in Proposal 31 as follows:

"41.0. In order to be validly published, the name of a taxon above the rank of family must be accompanied (a) by a description or diagnosis of the taxon, (b) by a reference (direct or indirect) to a previously and effectively published description or diagnosis of a taxon above the rank of genus, or (c) by a reference (direct or indirect) to a previously and effectively published description or diagnosis of a genus when the author of the new name indicates that no more than one genus belongs to the taxon. Such names proposed on or after 1 January 1935 must comply with Art. 36.1."

"Ex. 0. Cronquist (Syst. Class. Flow. Pl.: 1981: 94) validated Illiciales Hu ex Cronquist by a diagnosis in Latin, and Eucommiales Nemejc ex Cronquist (l.c.: 182) by a full and direct reference (Art. 32.4) to the original Latin description of the taxon's only genus, Eucommia Oliver (1890)."

"Ex. 0bis.The Superorder Myrtanae (Bartl.) Takht. (Sist. Filog. Cvetk. Rast.: 295. 1966) is validated solely by the transfer of a name at the rank of class (Myrtopsida Bartl., Ord. Nat. Pl.: 225, 326. 1830, 'Myrti'), which is associated with a description in Latin."

"Ex 0ter. The ordinal name "Barbeyales" was proposed by Takhtajan (Sist. Filog. Cvetk. Rast.: 130. 1967) who based it on Barbeyaceae Rendle (1916), a family name validated by a description in English. As this is contrary to Art. 36.1, the correct citation is Barbeyales Reveal & Takht. (in Phytologia 74: 172. 1993) where a full and direct reference (Art. 32.4) was provided to the Latin description of Barbeya Schweinf. (1892), the only genus of the order as there defined.

The proposed new paragraph for Art. 41 covering suprageneric names was referred to the Special Committee. This means all of the currently permitted ways for establishing such names in the Code, including (b), may continue to be used to validate a new suprageneric name.

A decision on the entire question of parenthetical authorship of names above the rank of genus was, once again, delayed. Proposals 32 established the principle that a parenthetical author would be required only if this was the only means by which the name was validated. The matter was referred to the Special Committee. The Committee seemingly has three options regarding parenthetical authors: (a) none shall be cited, (b) parenthetical authors shall be used on when this is the only way a name is validated, and (c) parenthetical authors shall be used whenever a basionym is mentioned by the proposing author even if the name is associated with the validating description or diagnosis.

After all of the proposal were considered, and the provisions relating to names in current use (proposed new Art. 15) were defeated, a proposal from the floor deleted Art. 14, footnote 2. As a result, the following is a tentatively revised App. IIB. The entries are subject to further editing and corrections by the Editorial Committee. A proposed editorial change suggested here is the retention the nom. alt. for such family names as Gramineae,Leguminosae and Umbelliferae but delete this implication from Poaceae, Fabaceae and Apiaceae respectively. Only by a special provision in the Code are the former correct names and made an alternative to the otherwise correct names. Obviously, with the removal of the footnote, the last paragraph of the introduction to App. IIB needs to be removed. Presently this states:

For purposes of this list the starting point for Spermatophyta is Jussieu's Genera plantarum (4 Aug 1789); earlier usage of listed names has been disregarded, irrespective of the fact that for family names the starting point is the same as for all other names of Spermatophyta, 1 May 1753. A decision of the Tokyo Congress authorizes, for the time being, the maintenance of authorship and dates of publication of names as listed in this Appendix (Art. 14 Note 1, footnote).

Corrections for both sections of App. II dealing with vascular plants are presented below. Again, the following listing is subject to a complete and thorough review by the Editorial Committee.

NOTE: In a mental lapses, I incorrectly suggested a superconservation note maintaining Adoxaceae over Vacciniaceae. The two families are unrelated; I confused Viburnaceae, a non-conserved name, with the conserved Vacciniaceae. I wish to thank Dr. Richard Brummitt for calling the error to my attention. - JLReveal; 10 Feb 2000.
