The following listing augments and updates that published by me (Reveal, J. L. 1998. Comments on Art. 14, footnote 2: first place of publication for seed plant family names. Taxon 47: 851-856.). The purpose of this listing is to provide an up-to-date listing of names published prior to that currently listed in App. IIB - E. Spermatophyta of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Adoption of these places of publication over those presently given in the Code will have no impact on the current choice of names as potential conflicts can be resolved by superconservations. For example, Aceraceae Durande (1782) would have priority over Sapindaceae Juss. (1789). A statement, similar to that found now for other names in App. IIB, would need to be added. Namely, after Sapindaceae the Note would read "If this family is united with Aceraceae, the name Sapindaceae must be used." This is coupled with a similiar Note after Aceraceae: "If this family is united with Sapindaceae, the name Aceraceae is rejected in favour of Sapindaceae." Names such as Apiaceae and Clusiaceae will continue to have priority over Araliaceae and Hypericaceae by virtue of their special status as alternative names (ICBN, Art. 18.5) although with Hypericaceae (1782) predating Guttiferae (1789) it would be useful to have a specific statement mandating the use of Clusiaceae when combined with Hypericaceae. Adoption of the following listing will result in the removal of some superconservation statements. I am not immediately aware of any other required superconservation notes should the list be adopted.
Elsewhere I have present full listing of conserved names with notes on the changes in bibliographic references that would be required if Art. 14, footnote 2 is removed from the Code as well as those names that require conservation and protection.
