- Analysis of reported release and collection results from Cramer (1996) in compar
Introduction Cramer reports detections at McNary Dam for each daily release of PIT-tagged yearling chinook below Lower Granite Dam, with releases beginning on April 9 and concluding on June 1. Survival estimates are based on lumping detections into particular periods; each period is characterized by a single collection efficiency (discussed below). Based on the number of detections and the period-wise collection efficiency, Cramer estimates the actual number of fish passing McNary Dam in each period, sums over all periods, and divides into the release number to obtain a total survival for that release.

- Application of a Computer Model to the Sacramento River and Major Tributaries in
INTRODUCTION Pacific salmon are one of the most valuable commercial species in fisheries today, ranking second in quantity and value in 1983 (Allen & Hassler, 1986). However, high fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation has severely reduced the abundance of many stocks. Some stocks of Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Sacramento and San Joaquin River systems have declined dramatically since the construction of terminal dams. The current California stocks of Chinook are heavily supplemented by hatchery fish that are released as fry or fingerlings (Allen & Hassler, 1986).

- Climate Indicators of Salmon Survival
Abstract Using studies from the Columbia River, salmon survival and catch measures were correlated with several Pacific Northwest climate indices. Spring chinook survival rate and catch were varied with the Pacific Northwest climate index (PNI), which characterizes temperature and precipitation cycles in the Pacific Northwest. Cool/wet conditions were associated with higher survival and catch while warm/dry conditions were associated with lower stock measures. At a finer temporal scale, the survival of spring chinook from smolt to adult was correlated with the arrival time of smolts into the estuary and the spring transition date, which signals the beginning of spring and coastal upwelling. A match/mismatch hypothesis is suggested to explain how variation in spring transition and estuary entry dates can effect stock survival. The effects of hatchery production and hydrosystem passage on year class strength is also considered in terms of the match/mismatch mechanism.
- Comparison of Mainstem Recovery Options Recover-1 and DFOP
Introduction This document compares two competing mainstem survival options: one based on fish transportation and one that uses reservoir drawdown. The analysis considers spring/summer and fall chinook. The transportation option is based on Recover 1, detailed by Olsen and Anderson (1994). It is similar to Option 1 in the proposed Amendments to the 1994 Columbia River Basis Fish and Wildlife Program. The drawdown option contains elements of Option 5 in the Amendments and the Detailed Fishery Operating Plan advanced in several forms by state fishery agencies and Native American Tribes. For the present document these options are designated Recover 1 and DFOP. Each option is described along with the survival contributions of the individual components. The analysis used the passage model CRiSP1.5 and population trends were analyzed with the life cycle model, SLCMc. Since conclusions from this comparison depend on the mainstem passage model, the data sets used to calibrate and validate CRiSP1.5 are also discussed.
