LIGHT QUALITY AND SEEDLING PERFORMANCE OF ACACIA MANGIUM

Yu Hua, Ong Bee Lian, Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore, Singapore 119260

Acacia mangium is widely used in reforestation. In the present study, seeds of A. mangium were germinated in pots covered by white, blue, red and yellow phytatrays. Chlorophyll contents, chlorophyll fluorescence, gas exchange and growth of seedlings were determined 30 days after seed germination. Highest chlorophyll content, lowest chla/b ratio and lowest ,PSII were found in red-light plants. Fv/Fm did not differ significantly in all plants. Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency of plants grown in white light were highest. Plants grown in blue light allocated more resources to stems, red- and yellow-light plants allocated more resources to leaf. The dry weights of plants grown in blue, red, yellow were only 15% of those grown in white-light.
