CONSERVATION OF SPECIES IN THE DANUBE FLOOD PLAIN OF SLOVAKIA

Július Oszlányi, Institute of Landscape Ecology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, 814 99 Bratislava, Slovakia.

Flood plain forests biodiversity has been changed significantly in recent decades. Due to the changes in the hydrology of the area, man-made poplar clone monocultures prevail. Natural species diversity is preserved at several unaccessible isles and remote places, where both tree shrub and herbaceous layers are of natural species diversity. These biocenters or gene-pools represent important ecological-stable ecosystems of the Danube inland - delta at Slovakian territory. Their conservation and utilization as a source of renaturation and revitalization of prevailing poplar clones monocultures are the main tasks of both foresters and ecologists. Examples of typical species composition in the most important forest communities in the area, conservation and protection measure in accordance with the hydrological conditions will be presented. Building-up of the Gab_íkovo hydropower-plant changed the growing conditions in some areas. Specific measures (artificial flooding) serve to protect the valuable ecosystems of the area with high biodiversity against possible destruction.
