Solanum melongena, a member of Solanaceae being an important vegetable crop of the tropics is extensively cultivated the world over. The present study, carried out in India, the country of its origin, deals with its reproductive biology encompassing pollination biology, breeding system, floral morphology and phenology, pollen production and viability, stigma type and structure, path of pollen tubes in the gynoecium, ovule structure, organization and sequence of fertilization in relation to fruit set.
