A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF CLAVICORONA DOTY (BASIDIOMYCETE, APHYLLOPHORALES)

Lickey, E. B., K. W. Hughes, and R. H. Petersen, Dept. of Botany, Univ. of Tenn., Knoxville, TN.

Genus Clavicorona includes 10 described species which are grouped into two subgenera, Clavicorona and Ramosa. In addition, there are 7 to 8 undescribed species belonging to subg. Ramosa. This phylogenetic analysis of species within the genus is based on sequences of the nuclear ribosomal ITS1 - 5.8S - ITS2 region to determine interspecific relationships of the previously described species and putative new species. C. taxophila, representing subg. Clavicorona is highly divergent from species of subg. Ramosa. Within subg. Ramosa, C. pyxidata, C. cristata, C. microspora, and C. piperata all appear to be monophyletic, but C. colensoi and C. candelabrum do not. Several putative new species form clades that are not associated with previously described species.
