REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY OF BAUHINIA IN HONG KONG.

C.P.Y. Lau, L. Ramsden & R.M.K. Saunders, Depts. of Ecology & Biodiversity and Botany, University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong.

Reproductive biology of six species of Bauhinia have been investigated in Hong Kong, viz. B. blakeana, B. purpurea and B. variegata, B. championii, B. glauca and B. corymbosa. In field experiments, B. purpurea and B. variegata are self-compatible in autogamic, geitonogamic and xenogamic crosses, with self-incompatibility indices of 1.2 and 3.6 respectively. No seed set was observed in B. blakeana and it is therefore sterile. Only xenogamy exists in B. championii and B. corymbosa. The pollen:ovule ratios of B. variegata and B. corymbosa are 8751 and 807 respectively, B. variegata is accordingly obligately xenogamic, and B. corymbosa is facultatively xenogamic. The sucrose:hexose ratio in nectar of B. variegata is 3.6 (sucrose-dominated), whereas in B. championii it is 0.03 (hexose-dominated)..
