ON PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS FOR THE PARMELIOID LICHENS.

Yuri Kotlov, Komarov Botanical Institute, St.-Petersburg, Russia.

The primary aim of this work was to outline the intergeneric relationships for the parmelioid lichens. This group includes 63 traditionally accepted lichen genera closest to the genus Parmelia Ach. All this taxa were involved to the cladistic analysis based on the parsimony principles The morphological, geographical and ecological as well as chemical characters has been used for the analysis. The data were analyzed with PC-based program HENNIG86 (Farris,1988). The multiple hennig (mhennig*) algorithm following by the successive weighting of the characters found only equally parsimonious tree. The results from the analysis confirm the hypothesis that many of the traditionally accepted taxa of the parmelioid lichens are paraphyletic groups. The new alternative taxonomy is proposed. The work has been financially supported by the RFBR grant # 96-04-49783.
