THE PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICALITIES OF AMALGAMATING ANAMORPH ANDTELEOMORPH CONCEPTS.

Paul Cannon and Paul Kirk, CABI Bioscience, Egham, UK

Using a single name for all fungal morphs is desirable but currently impractical. DNA fingerprinting and sequencing give unequivocal links and indications of relationships, providing new tools for this task. As so many names are involved, the task must be achieved in stages, and by a large team. Currently, names for sexual morphs take precedence, but may not be appropriate where the anamorphs are more prominent, and/or described earlier. Anamorph and teleomorph taxon concepts do not always coincide. Holomorphs do not necessarily differ morphologically in both their teleomorph and anamorph stages, in some circumstances major differences in morphology are the result of minor genetic divergence, and classifications of many groups remain artificial. Changes must be made with users' interests at the fore, but without impeding systematic progress.
