A TAXONOMIC REVISION OF THE GENUS PTYCHOMITRIUM (MUSCI) IN THE WORLD

Cao Tong, Shuiliang Guo and Chien Gao (Inst. of Applied Ecology, Academia Sinica, Shenyang)

Of 125 taxa recorded, about 63 species of the genus Ptychomitrium are considered to be taxonomically recognized entities in the world. The genus Ptychomitrium could be clustered into six sections including two new ones: Section Sellowianum Cao et Guo, sect. nov. and Section dentatum Cao et Guo, sect. nov. The pattern of geographic distribution of the genus showed that the species with dentate leaves are dominated in North Hemisphere while those with entire leaves are mainly distributed in South Hemisphere with disjunctive distribution among South America, Africa and Australia.
