Non-symbiotic hemoglobins are the subject of much current enquiry. We have been studying the roles of hemoglobins in the rice plant. Recombinant rice hemoglobin (Hb-1) was used to generate antibodies in rabbits. These antibodies were used as probes for understanding the expression and in-situ localization of Hbs during plant development. Good signals were observed with tissue extracts during normal development. Hbs appear to be localized to specific areas in rice tissues. Data from additional physiological and localization studies will be presented.
