A CLADISTIC ANALYSIS OF SUBTRIBE CHRYSOPSIDINAE (ASTERACEAE: ASTEREAE)

John C. Semple* and Lesley Tebby. U. Waterloo, ON, Canada.

A cladistic analysis of relationships within the Chrysopsidinae was performed on a matrix of 33 characters by 32 species of Chrysopsidinae: Bradburia, Chrysopsis, Croptilon, Heterotheca, Noticastrum, Pityopsis, Tomentaurum. Analyses were repeated with a species from 1 of 6 genera as outgroup: Astranthium, Boltonia, Erigeron, Geissolepis, Osbertia, Townsendia. Both micro and macro characters were scored: habit, stem, leaf, indument, achene, karyotype and anatomical traits. Numbers of most parsimonious trees, arrangement of genera, C.I. and R.I. differed depending upon outgroup. In all analyses, genera were monophyletic. The Bradburia (hirtella, pilosa) clade was never sister group to Chrysopsis. In strict consensus, bootstrap and majority-rule analyses, Bradburia, Croptilon and Heterotheca usually formed a clade. Lower branching of the trees were not well resolved.
