Allopolyploid speciation has been suggested to have occurred in Geeae, a clade within the Rosoids consisting of Fallugia, Sieversia, Waldsteinia, Coluria and Geum sensu lato. To investigate this we compared phylogenies based on maternally inherited chloroplast DNA (the trnL-trnF intron and spacer) and nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS). The two data sets were fairly congruent, both supporting some unexpected groupings. Geum appears to be paraphyletic, including both Waldsteinia and Coluria, as well as certain other segregates. This preliminary evaluation of allopolyploidy is not conclusive, but gives some support to the hypothesis.
