PHYLOGENY OF THE MIMOSOIDEAE -- A REVIEW

JAMES GRIMES AND MELISSA LUCKOW Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, and L.H. Bailey Hortorium, Cornell University

Progress in our understanding of the phylogeny of the Mimosoideae is reviewed. Analyses of mimosoid taxa are compared, and congruence in the results are discussed. Most progress has been made with tribe Ingeae, both in species-level revision, and in phylogenetic studies. Analyses confirm that Acacieae is polyphyletic, and nested among a paraphyletic Ingeae. Phylogeny of 'Acacieae' is under study by many groups, but the results of these studies are not strictly comparable. A phylogenetic study of Parkieae has been published, and though it was not intended to test monophyly of the tribe, this is not in doubt. The Mimoseae have been subject of studies of many genera or groups of genera, but the important question of whether the tribe is monophyletic remains. The correct taxonomic position of Mimozygantheae remains unstudied.
