The subtribe Gonosperminae comprises three genera with a disjunct distribution between the Canary Islands (Lugoa and Gonospermum) and South Africa (Inulanthera). An ITS phylogeny of this subtribe and selected genera of the Anthemideae does not support the monophyly of the subtribe, therefore, previous hypotheses which regarded the Gonosperminae as a floristic link between the Canarian and South African biotas are rejected. The Canarian taxa form three major clades which are not monophyletic and which are nested within an unresolved polytomy of continental species. In addition, the genus Lugoa is part of a clade including G. fruticosum, G. gomerae and G. multiflorum, recognition of Lugoa as a separate genus is thus not justified.
