BIODIVERSITY PROSPECTING AND DRUG DISCOVERY IN ARID AND SEMIARID ECOSYSTEMS OF ARGENTINA AND CHILE

Barbara Timmermann, The University of Arizona, College of Pharmacy, Tucson, AZ 85721

The Latin American International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) Program consists of public and private institutions, including universities, pharmaceutical companies and conservation organizations, to address biodiversity conservation and the promotion of sustained economic activity in Argentina, Chile and Mexico through drug discovery from natural products. This project includes biodiversity surveys and inventories, selection and acquisition of natural products derived from biodiversity, training and infrastructure support for host country scientific institutions, and intellectual property agreements so that economic and other benefits from these discoveries are equitably shared and accrue to local institutions and communities involved in the discovery of the natural product.
